If the present turns you off, let the future turn you on

Judge not lest ye be judged.

Biblical misquotations come back to mind every April when I'm immersed in demos as part of the judging panel charged with selecting 16 unsigned acts to play the T Break stage at T in the Park. Along with a dozen other journalists, bookers, broadcasters and industry bods, my reasons for freely donating weeks of listening time are held up by certain outsiders for scrutiny and scorn. We've got agendas. We're egomaniacs. We've decided the line-up before hearing a note. Worst of all, it's a pointless exercise that never turns a T Break band into a household name.
