Boogie-woogie fans, R&B nuts, party animals and civic dignitaries alike turned up in satisfying numbers and a celebratory mood as Jools Holland brought a summertime version of his Hogmanay Hootenannies to the Playhouse.
Holland does a good knees-up, romping away on the piano keys centre stage, singing Elmore James and Big Bill Broonzy blues in his serviceable style to tightly executed big band arrangements and introducing band members and singers up to the soloist's mic to do their turns with verve and enthusiasm.
