Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, Hidden People (Navigator)

Once two-fifths of folk-pop supergroup Equation, Roberts and Lakeman have been, if not exactly hidden people, then certainly out of the spotlight in recent times, the former staying home with the couple's twin daughters while her partner toured with his brother Seth's band. They've revived their professional partnership strongly, however, with this collection of songs that, although mostly self-penned, continue the storytelling aspect of traditional song and create modern folk ballads from events such as the miners' strike, which still impacts on Roberts' home village in Yorkshire. Roberts has matured into a natural, personable singer and much like their in-laws, Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman, they forge music that can rock and take on pop sensibilities and catchy choruses while remaining true to their roots. A mini folk opera take on the traditional The White Hind, with guest voices including Jim Moray, is among the most instantly memorable tracks but overall this is clearly realised, bright and attractive 21st century folk music.
