Macmaster/Hay Hook (MDMC)

With a list of musical associates that runs from Sting and The Poozies to Bonnie Prince Billy and Mystery Juice (whose frontman Tim Matthew is co-producer here), Mary Macmaster and Donald Hay bring an array of influences to their second album, which is somewhat broader in scope than their duo debut, Love And Reason.

Somewhat, but somehow still not quite broad enough.

The basic ingredients are sound: Macmaster's voice and lovely harp playing are the icing on an electronic cake mixed by percussionist Hay – a recipe they apply to traditional tunes, their own compositions, some Breton songs, one each from piper Fred Morrison and Peggy MacInnes, and Elvis Costello and Clive Langer's much-covered Shipbuilding. The last-named may not please fans of the song, because they play fast and loose with its clever structure, and Macmaster's phrasing of the lyric is idiosyncratic to say the least.
