As they showed in a memorable Edinburgh concert some years ago, Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski's trio are an entirely self-sufficient group.

That means Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder would have to bring a very subtle presence indeed to the five tracks that feature him here so as not to over-egg an already deeply satisfying pudding. That Milder succeeds superbly is one of the triumphs of a recording that marks more than 20 years together for the Poles, who met in their teens and have enjoyed success at home as The Simple Acoustic Trio and worldwide as trumpeter Tomasz Stanko's rhythm section. The quartet numbers include Milder's quietly brooding Still and the convincing conversion into a jazz ballad of a piece of Polish grunge music. Meanwhile, as well as reinforcing their credentials as masters of the tenderly lyrical, the trio dig into The Police's Message In A Bottle with no little vigour as Wasilewski's chords bring new meaning to the term "left-hand drive".
