The Wiyos certainly covered vast geographical and cultural territories in their recreation through America's vernacular musical riches of the Wizard of Oz.
From junkyard blues to the Cuban neighbourhood via surf song harmonies, backwoods Appalachia and duelling pedal steel country, they presented a fascinating travelogue that somehow merged Hawaiian strains entirely naturally with New Yoik klezmer and rockabilly twang and featured the most deliciously warped version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and – you won't read this phrase often – virtuosic trumpet kazoo amid songs sung with plaintive honesty. You really didn't know where this lot were taking you next, and boy, was that fun.
