And they did. But the most eloquent justification for continuing the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland’s good work came not in words but in notes.
Every summer, 21 or so of Scotland’s leading young jazz talents gather away from distractions, work on their chops and play in some of the UK’s most kenspeckle jazz venues – this year it was the Sage in Gateshead and Band on the Wall, Manchester – before returning to the most kenspeckle of all, the Old Fruitmarket. They arrive sounding polished, confident and often exotic.
