omar sosA, old fruitmarket, Glasgow Absorbed in magic

THERE was a curious, unintentional parallel between trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf's opening set on this, his Glasgow debut and Cuban piano virtuoso Omar Sosa's own introduction to the city 12 years ago.

Maalouf arrived after an eventful journey from Paris with just his trumpet, the clothes he stood in and his guitarist. With the rest of his band stuck at the airport, he forged ahead with a duet and like Sosa, whose gig at the Tron Theatre's Victoria Bar in 2000 wasn't at all as he anticipated, made a mighty impact.
