Santigold, HMV Picture House

Flamboyant fun: Santigold delivers a show, with costume changes and dancers, in a medium-sized venue.

It is surely true that more gigs would be improved by a dancing horse. It would certainly add something to many a generic indie band or overly macho hip-hop performance. However, for now, such a moment remains the preserve of Santigold when her offstage costume change is covered by her two dancers and a pantomime horse shimmying about the stage for a few, frankly surreal, moments.

This gig certainly made a decent fist of delivering a proper show in a medium-sized venue, with costume changes, dancers and a heavy emphasis on flamboyant fun. While Santigold's career has undeniably stalled in the four years she's taken to release a second album, her likeable, onstage personality has not suffered, and she genuinely seemed pleased to be there, with her rapid-fire delivery seemingly trying to squeeze in as much as possible.That is where matters stumbled a tad, as Santigold has a handful of great tunes and a couple of poor numbers, with most sitting firmly in-between. The highlights were punchy in the right way, from The Keepers' brilliant pinching of Running Up That Hill to the bright pop of Say Aha, that could get the most reserved pulling shapes. Yet there was sometimes a lumpen sound, too much meshing things into an unsatisfactory and messy noise for the actual music to be consistently strong. Still, there was some needed sharpness on Shove It, dedicated to Pussy Riot, while getting fans to dance onstage during The Creator suggested Santigold's charm is partly due to the fact she's a pop star you can actually party with, rather than just admire from afar.
