Review: Barry Manilow, SSE Hydro, Glasgow

Verdict: four stars.

The word legend gets thrown around too often these days - and very few are deserving of such stature, well, there is one exception - the ultimate showman Barry Manilow.

The Brookyln-born crooner turned the city into Glasvegas for just one night when he took to the stage at the SSE Hydro.

Barry's army of 'Fanilows' raised their glow sticks high into the air - I kid you not - as the star made his grand entrance wearing a bright blue sequined suit jacket.

Opening up with It's A Miracle and Could It Be Magic, the 70-year-old matched his youthful appearance with energetic moves.

He then beamed, "Hello Glasgow! We're back. Did you miss me? I missed you."

The audience were then taken through a masterclass of singing and songwriting talent as Barry sang some of his greatest hits.

Can't smile without you - a song also recorded by the Carpenters - raised the roof and had everyone dancing on their feet.

While Even Now - the lead single from Manilow's 1978 album of the same name - showed of his spectacular vocal range which is still flawless despite decades in showbusiness.

Barry then gave us a taste of Broadway with a pitch perfect rendition of Memory, the hit song from Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats.

Manilow might have ruled the charts in the 70s with his big ballads but he proved that he is no diva by recognising the talents of his then disco rivals with a melody of Earth, Wind & Fire's Boogie Wonderland, Donna Summer's Hot Stuff and Stevie Wonder's Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours.

His biggest hits Mandy and Copacabana were just a bonus on a night Barry captured yet another 'Fanilow' - me.

It's rare that a voice can just simply capture an audience - there was no razzmatazz, well maybe just a little. And it's this same rarity that makes Manilow a living legend.
