Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall

The RSNO have brought three big programmes to the St Magnus Festival this year, but haven't brought all their players.

Despite a voluminous venue, limitations of space were cited as the reason for significantly reduced strings.

To open Saturday's concert, a supple and haunting flute solo from Katherine Bryan transported the audience into the world of Debussy's Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune. And with many other beautiful solo lines from the woodwinds, it was the strings that lost out in the reduced arrangement, the cellos in particular lacking weight.
