Sir Mick Jagger has been ordered to rest by doctors after developing a throat infection, causing the Rolling Stones to cancel a major show in Australia.

The group have had to axe a performance at Hanging Rock, near Melbourne, during their latest tour, which includes a number of dates rescheduled from earlier in the year in the wake of the suicide of Jagger's girlfriend L'Wren Scott.

The promoter for the tour said Sir Mick is "under strict doctor's orders to rest his vocal cords for the next few days in order to recuperate for the remainder of the tour".

They had been due to play the show tomorrow, with their next gig due to take place on Wednesday in Sydney.

A spokesman for the group said: "The Rolling Stones are incredibly disappointed to cancel the Hanging Rock gig and to disappoint their fans but were left with no other option."
