Mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill is, beyond argument, one of the finest singers working in the world today, never mind one of this country's great talents.

No-one who heard her heart-stopping way with Mahler's Das Lied Von Der Erde this weekend, an exquisite performance in which she never seemed less than completely as ease, could possibly contradict that. Her voice, full of passion and presence across her range, is perfect for this intense, brooding work, and it had the perfect context here. Conductor Robin Ticciati took the Cortese chamber orchestra arrangement and produced a contained interpretation of the score that challenged many of our ideas about Mahler and the broad symphonic nature of this piece. A compact and concentrated reading that was quite precisely focused, it perhaps left tenor Toby Spence's supporting role on the margin, but the players had a real swagger in their playing of the Chinoiserie in Mahler's orchestration, and principal oboe Robin Williams in particular had a magnificent night.
