SCO/Ticciati, City Halls, Glasgow

This was the first of a pair of Viennese programmes from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and their principal conductor Robin Ticciati, who with a genteel Schubert Five and the luxury sound of baritone Matthias Goerne painted an elegant cityscape.

The only hint of an underbelly crept in inadvertently: just as Ticciati raised his baton for Webern's arrangement of the Ricercar from Bach's Musical Offering, an ambulance screeched by. Webern's arrangement explodes Bach's counterpoint and scatters the components around; against the faint wail of the siren the effect was vaguely apocalyptic.
