Suspire are a four-piece from Glasgow with a liking for what they call rock'n'roll synth pop, a leaning which finds its most potent expression on Moonshine and Salvation Sister, the two standout tracks on this self-released debut.
The first, with its bright synth washes aims for club-friendly euphoria, while the second builds its equally hummable chorus round the fuzz-laden guitars of Paul Duffin and Chris Kelly. Elsewhere, Abigail ticks the acoustic ballad box and, because every band needs a barnstorming showstopper, Yes! delivers an upbeat thumper with another soaring chorus. The other notable thing about Suspire is that they have a female drummer, Clare Duffin. Think A-Ha but with the Velvet Underground's Mo Tucker on skins. If you're under 30 and those names mean nothing, Suspire occupy a spot somewhere between Aussie synth duo Empire Of The Sun and Los Angeles-based "chillwave" pioneers Toro Y Moi and Washed Out - which really isn't a bad place to be.
