The Killers, Battle Born (Vertigo)

BACK after a short hiatus during which frontman Brandon Flowers released a rather good solo album, The Killers seem intent on viewing their cliched widescreen American landscapes through oversized 1980s-tinted spectacles.

Battle Born's cover is a dead giveaway, as a lightning bolt splits the album title and a wild horse and a fast car go head-to-head on a lonely road. Musically and lyrically they're still chasing Bruce Springsteen, but this time they're on a desert highway with the Boss hightailing it over the horizon as REO Speedwagon and Foreigner bump their fender from behind.
