The xx, Usher Hall, Edinburgh

The last time this writer saw The xx live, it was easy to ponder how their sparse sound would suit bigger venues.

That occasion (in Glasgow's Captain's Rest) was before they won the Mercury Music Prize, appeared on umpteen TV programmes and saw their second record, Coexist, close in on topping the charts.

Therefore, what was most impressive about their Scottish live return was the manner in which they've adapted to their surroundings. They haven't opted for additional musicians to provide extra muscle, but there was an emphasis on delivering a proper performance, from an opening that saw vocalist Romy Madley Croft appearing obscured behind a curtain, to the unveiling of a large X behind the band as the regular set neared its climax.
