Tom Russell, Tron Theatre, Glasgow

It was billed as an evening of country music laced with a bit of Tex-Mex and American folk, but in effect Tom Russell was more than that, his performance typical of the varied strands of the Americana musical culture.

Russell is still a bit young to be described as gnarled, but he certainly gives the impression of heading in that direction. His on-stage persona is one of "been there, seen it, done it", not unreasonable given that he taught in Nigeria during the Biafran war and honed his musical skills in a Vancouver strip joint, where he used to sing The Ballad of Ira Hayes to the native American actor Chief Dan George.
