As well as music from the Black Diamonds Havana Band and DJ Lord Holyrude and cocktails like the period tincture Harvey Wallbanger at bargain prices, the organisers promise An Evening of Slapstick, both live on stage as part of a cabaret that also includes singing, dancing, burlesque and comedy and on celluloid in the screening room. The venue is Glasgow University Union and tickets are £14 (£12 concessions).
l MENDELSSOHN on Mull, the island festival celebrating the composer's inspiring visit to Scotland celebrates 25 years of music making in 2013. As usual the festival will team emerging young musicians with mentors – Levon Chilingirian, Marcia Crayford, Gaby Lester, Susie Meszaros and Stephen Orton this year – in three groups which tour churches and community halls across the island. All three play the opening concert at Tobermory Parish Church on July 1 and the final one in St John's Cathedral, Oban on July 6.
l PIPING is serious business and piping competitions serious events with rigorous structures of piobaireachd, and march, strathspey and reel. The City of Edinburgh Pipe Band aims to introduce a little levity with its annual Pipe Major's Wheel of Fortune competition, which will take place from noon on Saturday in Danderhall Miners' Club, where the band was born. The music in Pipe Major Barry Donaldson's event is selected by the spinning of a golden chanter, which may come to rest on tunes from Brittany, Galicia and Ireland as well as local composers including Gordon Duncan and GS McLennan.
