Cats for kids as students stage famous musical
Students from the University of the West of Scotland and Glasgow Kelvin College are combining their musical theatre and technical skills for a production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats at Scottish Youth Theatre in Glasgow from tomorrow to Saturday, with shows each evening at 7.30pm.
As well as the public performances, the young people will also be staging a matinee show on Saturday for pupils from Glasgow's Langlands Primary School and Croftcroighn Primary School, both of which cater for children with complex needs.
The link between the colleges and the schools has been forged by fourth-year UWS musical theatre student Naomi Jones, whose brother has autism and attends Langlands. After she took a choir of students to sing carols there, the idea of the schools performance of Cats was born.

Britten boost for anniversary
Bachtrack is an online classical events site that annually monitors its listings of classical concerts and associated events and has just released a breakdown of the 15,000 concerts, 4500 operas and 2600 dance performances it noted in 2013. In his 100th anniversary year, Benjamin Britten was the most performed composer in the UK, and fourth most popular internationally behind Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. That post-festive detox programme could be kickstarted tomorrow by a visit to Blackwell's bookshop on Edinburgh's South Bridge, where personal trainer Tracey Griffin, author of the Healthy Living Yearbook, will present an interactive workshop with information on nutrition, wellbeing and exercise. The event is free, but ticketed.
