Curious incident at Festival stage
IT is over a year away, but the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh has announced that it will be one of the venues on the first national tour of the National Theatre's stage adaptation (by Simon Stephens) of Mark Haddon's Whitbread-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Directed by Marianne Elliott, whose credits include War Horse, The Curious Incident won seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including best new play and best director. The play's West End run was interrupted when part of the ceiling fell on the audience at the Apollo Theatre shortly before Christmas. It will visit Edinburgh from April 27 to May 9, 2015.

Swingy quartet jazzing it up
PETE Johnstone, the Glenn Gould of the Hammond Organ - particularly in the way he vocally accompanies his keyboard improvisations - was described as a "big swinging pianist" by The Herald's Rob Adams when he was on his way to the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year title in 2012, via residency at the piano in the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra. Now his own group, the Pete Johnstone Organ Quartet, is built around the swingiest of instruments and eschews the need for a bass player in favour of the leader's big left hand. Completing the line-up are guitarist Davie Dunsmuir, saxophonist Jonathan Chung and drummer Doug Hough when the band plays Edinburgh's Jazz Bar tonight at 9pm and Glasgow Art Club tomorrow from 8pm.
