Stirling will be ready for a Top festival
STIRLING'S Top of the Town, an area where many residential homes still sit cheek by jowl with historic buildings like the Stirling Castle and the Church of the Holy Rude and arts venues including the Tolbooth, has its own new festival this weekend. The Top Festival tomorrow brings together Stirling Smith Gallery, Artlink and Creative Stirling with Stirling Council, Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland in a programme of events that will be launched by comedian Phil Kay, pictured, at the Tolbooth at noon. Everything is free in a packed day of art, music and heritage events that continues into the evening.

Mobile way to learn bagpipes
PIPER Allan MacDonald, whose Stirling 2014 commission The Bruce 700 premieres at the Albert Halls in Stirling on Thursday, June 26, has launched a new way of learning to play the bagpipes via iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The new app has been developed in partnership with Thomas Zoller, a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's piping course, where he was a pupil of MacDonald's, and who now runs a piping academy in Hofheim, Germany. It represents a revolutionary development in bagpipe education that informs and enlightens using graphics, animation, audio, and notation The app also allows learners to interact and learn through games and self-testing sections, including the enhancement of listening skills, thus focusing on the music with the minimum of language input in an entertaining and efficient way.
