The Hampstead-born Bearsden resident is the current Children's Laureate, and has been responsible for the words of 184 books for children. One of these, The Gruffalo, became a publishing and story-telling sensation, has sold more than 10 million copies, been translated into 40 languages, is revered as a modern classic and been adapted for stage and screen. But the opportunity to adapt her own book was one Donaldson was happy to resist.
