It all adds up: Three is the magic number

It is just as they are convening over coffee to talk – they being Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Boyce, acclaimed film maker David Mackenzie, and noted musician Raymond MacDonald – when the boys arrive.

"The boys are outside," someone shouts, and the three artists, who have been collaborating for the past 18 months on this Lighthouses project, are suddenly distracted.

The boys? I ask. "Yes, they are massive," Mackenzie says, casually, "and they still smell of the sea and are covered in barnacles." Where are these boys from? "Burntisland, Fife," says MacDonald, perhaps best known as a saxophonist but also member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and Professor of Music Psychology and Improvisation at Glasgow Caledonian University.
