The news that Harry Potter author JK Rowling is working on a play about the boy wizard got us thinking about the author's most memorable, if sometimes controversial, quotes.

Rowling confirmed that a new play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and Rowling, will open in London in 2016.

1 On failure

Some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all-in which case, you fail by default.

2 On her wealth

I think the single biggest thing that money gave me-and obviously I came from a place where I was a single mother and it really was hand to mouth at one point. It was literally as poor as you can get in Britain without being homeless at one point. If you've ever been there you will never, ever take for granted that you don't need to worry. Never.

3 On Scottish independence

There is a fringe of nationalists who like to demonise anyone who is not blindly and unquestionably pro-independence. I suspect, notwithstanding the fact that I've lived in Scotland for 21 years and plan to remain here for the rest of my life, that they might judge me 'insufficiently Scottish' to have a valid view.

4 On imagination

We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.

5 On life

As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.

6 On Body Positivity

Is 'fat' really the worst thing a human being can be? Is 'fat' worse than 'vindictive', 'jealous', 'shallow', 'vain', 'boring' or 'cruel'? Not to me.

7 On Harry

I see Harry as someone who is struggling to do the right thing, who is not without faults, who acts impetuously as you would expect someone of his age to act, but who is ultimately a very loyal person, and a very very courageous person. So I would say he is a good role model.

8 On appearance

I found it very difficult, when I first became well known, to read criticism about how I look, how messy my hair was, and how generally unkempt I look. Maybe my mother was right and I do need to put my hair back and tidy myself up a bit. So I did tidy myself up a bit.

9 On self worth

Whatever money you might have, self-worth really lies in finding out what you do best.

10 On Scotland's future

My guess is that if we vote to stay, we will be in the heady position of the spouse who looked like walking out, but decided to give things one last go. I doubt whether we will ever have been more popular, or in a better position to dictate terms, than if we vote to stay.
