Madagascar Live!, Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow

HHHH

In the final destination and the only Scottish city in its UK tour schedule, Madagascar Live! had the jungle drums beating on Saturday afternoon. Based on the DreamWorks movie, the musical adaptation directed by Gip Hoppe was faithful to the film but added a few new elements to please the young audience. The leading cast of four (playing Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman) were all strong performers with no weak link. Gloria the hippo's vocals were probably the most impressive, carrying the song that closed the show, but moany Melman the hypochon-giraffe was also just the right shade of pathetic for those all-important laughs.
