THE fans have turned out, in high-spirited droves, to see Vincent and Flavia.

Six series of television’s Strictly Come Dancing have brought the tango-tastic partnership of Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace into people’s living-rooms - now Midnight Tango has brought the couple live, and on-stage, to kick up a storm of scything, duelling legs, fleet footwork and an added something that can only be defined as star quality. They simple dazzle. Even if their costumes hadn’t that little bit more distinctive – his suits sharper, her frocks both edgier and more clingingly minimal –or their duets sparked with showier steps than the rest of the pairings, your eye would still have searched them out in a crowd... and lingered longer, snared by the dramatically expressive way they channel the music through their every move.

That said, you could arrive at this show totally innocent of Vincent-Flavia fever and soon find yourself hugely impressed and thoroughly entertained. There’s no coasting on the Strictly... bandwagon here. Midnight Tango has another kind of reality in mind. There’s a set (designed by Morgan Large) that’s richly detailed to look like a Buenos Aires bar you’d actually like to hang out in and a live band, Tango Siempre, with a repertoire to suit all moods. The plot saw the pairt ied into affairs of the heart, as befits the flirtations, seductions, jealousies and despairs that are the time-honoured undertow of Argentinian tango. There’s some nicely-judged comedy, but most of all there’s a fabulous array of solos, duets, ensembles that showcase the variety of tango styles with a passion that goes to the heart of the dance. There are no slouches here – but the remarkable Vincent and Flavia are surely worth your ticket-price alone.
