American dance critics have fallen in love with Scottish Ballet's sexy take on A Streetcar Named Desire, as the Scottish dance company's US three-week tour comes to an end on Saturday in Washington.

The Huffington Post said: "They almost had to hose down the audience at intermission. Erik Cavallari's Stanley had just had make-up sex with Sophie Martin's Stella, and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's imaginative way with the erotic pas de deux had everyone hot and bothered."

It said the production was "a welcome departure from the one-note depictions of sex in the male-dominated world of ballet." The Post paid tribute to Eve Mutso (Blanche) and described her performance as mesmerising.

The Charleston City Paper said that Scottish Ballet's 26-dancer production "exceed all expectations. Like a silent film - but without over-exaggeration - the principal characters' storytelling abilities demonstrate pure acting at its finest."

The PittsburghPost-Gazette said the drama and the dance was handled with a cinematic flair that puts it in a genre all its own.

Christopher Hampson, Scottish Ballet Artistic Director: "We have been overwhelmed by the incredible response from audiences during our tour across America and thrilled by all the stellar reviews that we've received. This American tour of A Streetcar Named Desire has been instrumental in showing Scottish Ballet to be a creative power house and has enabled us to fly the flag for Scotland overseas. The tour has been a huge success and we are looking forward to finishing on a high with our final performances at the prestigious Kennedy Center."
