Welsh baritone Howard has a sensational voice, and his rendition of This Nearly Was Mine was perfectly pitched and a reminder of the musicality of this Rodgers and Hammerstein creation (although his heavily accented dialogue was more operatic than accessible musical theatre style). Bloody Mary was a different beast, with more than a touch of the mock-comic and a passing resemblance to Yoda. Sayre proved herself to be far more than a character actress with her haunting rendition of Bali Ha’i.

A great success on the West End stage earlier this year, this Lincoln Center Theater Production of South Pacific features two actors – Jason Howard as Emile de Becque and Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary – from the original Broadway cast.
