Writer Charlie Higson is to create a new drama series based on the gothic tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for ITV.
The 10-part series will move the adventure from Victorian London, the setting for Robert Louis Stevenson's story when it was published in 1886, to the 1930s.
The announcement of the drama comes just days after the channel revealed plans for another vintage horror adaptation with a programme based on the story of Frankenstein, starring Sean Bean.
Fast Show star Higson has won acclaim for his writing with best-selling books such as his young James Bond series and horror series The Enemy - and he has written for ITV with an episode of Miss Marple.
His story - about a man who transforms into another character during times of anger, stress and threat - will exude "mystery, fantasy, horror and sci-fi", according to the channel.
It will begin with Robert Jekyll as a newly-qualified doctor living in India with his foster parents who control his transformations with medication at a time when his alter ego is becoming more powerful. Programme-makers will use CGI techniques to achieve his transformations.
Higson said: "It's an exciting challenge to take Stevenson's work and use it as the basis for a new Jekyll & Hyde.
"So many superheroes with secret dual personalities have been brought to life thanks to Jekyll & Hyde. He's one of literature's most important and influential characters and it's a privilege to be rediscovering him."
Casting of the series - which will also feature zombies, werewolves and vampires - is yet to be announced and filming will begin in India in January, before moving to London.
Stevenson's original book was published as Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, in which the main character was called Henry Jekyll.
The story inspired a BBC series seven years ago, called Jekyll, written by Doctor Who and Sherlock show boss Steven Moffat and starring James Nesbitt as a descendant of the character.
