The Night Bus, Channel 4, 10pm

It's not hard to see why some bright spark at Channel 4 thought this programme would be a good idea: anyone who's ever braved a night bus knows all about the colourful characters you can meet and the picaresque adventures you can have. Accordingly, C4 kitted out a London bus with a remote-controlled camera and filmed the proceedings, which they now present in this new, three-part fly-on-the-wall series. For the record, the bus in question is the N29, which runs north to south through the English capital. Tonight's opening episode focuses on the function of the night bus as last-gasp pick-up joint and introduces us to characters like Daniel, who's out on the town to celebrate his 18th birthday.

The Birds, Film4, 11.05pm

Along with Psycho, which preceded this film, and acclaimed 1958 work Vertigo, Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 adaptation of a Daphne du Maurier short story is one of his most celebrated movies. In the eyes of esteemed film critic David Thomson it's also his last "unflawed" film, one his most abstract and, intriguingly, the one in which (in Thomson's words) Hitchcock had "at last elected to act on his most insightful reviews and had admitted sexual insecurity as his subject". So if you thought it was a horror film about Tippi Hedren being attacked by seagulls in a coastal resort in northern California, think again.
