X-Factor sheds million viewers in a day

The X Factor has seen its audience drop by a million in a day, as the second edition of the show failed to match the success of the series opener.

The ITV talent show drew an average audience of 8.2 million last night, down 1.3 million on the number who watched the first auditions on Saturday night.

And despite the changes to the judging panel which were expected to give the show a huge boost this year, it is down 1.7 million on the equivalent show for 2013.

Last year the second edition of the series had an average audience of 9.9 million.

This year has seen Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini - formerly Cole - return to the judges line-up, sitting alongside newcomer Melanie B and programme stalwart Louis Walsh.

The panel has been refreshed to rejuvenate interest in the show after audiences slipped drastically for the previous two series.

ITV will still be pleased that last night's X Factor programme was the most-watched show on TV yesterday. It was more than three million ahead of the average audience for BBC1's Countryfile which was screened at the same time, between 8pm and 9pm.

Viewers last night saw husband and wife duo Kitten And The Hip - made up of Ashley Slater, 53, and Kitten Quinn, 28 - from Brighton perform, with the panel putting her through alone. Slater has previously had chart success of his own fronting the band Freakpower, while Quinn was a lapdancer before turning to music.
