Scottish photographer Dougie Wallace has won second prize in the Professional Portraiture category of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards, the world's largest photography competition.

Wallace was selected from over 87,000 entries for a series called Glasgow, Second City of The Empire. On the run up to the Scottish Referendum. The work compares life expectancy rates of people born in London's Kensington & Chelsea borough (84.4 years for men) to those in Glasgow's Calton (on average 54 years for men).

The announcement was made at the gala ceremony in London and his work will be seen in the awards exhibition at Somerset House until May 10, and published in the annual Sony World Photography Awards winners book.

Edinburgh-based prog-funk thrash-jazz band Thunkfish (pictured) launch their new single, Renegades of Pthronk, at the Voodoo Rooms in the capital on Wednesday April 29 with support from Manchester jazz, funk and hip hop collective Glowrogues. The single follows Thunkfish's debut EP, which was released in 2013, and appearances on the Fringe and at Edinburgh and Aberdeen jazz festivals, and gives a foretaste of the band's first full-length album, which is due for release later this year.

A group of jewellers and silversmiths from Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee will show their work in an exhibition at the Lighthouse in Glasgow from May 7 to 13. Called Fresh Air and sponsored by the Incorporation of Goldsmiths, the exhibition will showcase pieces created using traditional skills, unconventional materials and cutting edge modern techniques by artists including Ellis Mhairi Cameron, Ailsa Whittet Ritchie, Adam Henderson, Isla Macer Law, Morna Darling, and Hamish Dobbie.

Stirling's Makar, Anita Govan, is the force behind Still Remains, a one day only, outdoor performance of drama, poetry, archaeology and music in Plean Country Park, near Stirling, on Saturday May 2.

Inspired by the practice WW1 trenches, which were discovered and excavated at Plean Country Park in 2014, Stirling on Stage will take audiences on a promenade in a family event, based on the poems of primary six classes in East Plean & St Ninian's primary schools, produced with the poet.

There are three shows, at 2pm, 3pm, and 3.50pm.

Edinburgh-based folk duo Gillespie & Wolfe launch their debut album, Grace Pour Down, at the capital's Roxy venue on Saturday May 16. The two musicians - singer-guitarist Sam Gillespie and singer-fiddler Becka Wolfe - got together in 2013 and have been working since then on the Edinburgh pub folk sessions circuit, including long-established folk hostelry Sandy Bell's, building a repertoire of traditional and original songs. The album focuses entirely on their own songwriting and their launch night will feature guests including clarsach player Siannie Moodie.
