n During the Edinburgh Festival, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery is inviting families to take part in its Portrait Gallery Olympics.

Throughout August, children aged four and over and their families can get involved in free sports-inspired art events.

n Following its successful family day series, Tramway in Glasgow will host another dedicated to Jannis Kounellis on August 5. Participants will be able to explore an exhibition of sculpture and installations by the Greek artist and there will be drop-in workshops for families.

n Summerhall in Edinburgh will host a visual arts exhibition featuring the work of female artists from Friday titled Only Women Women Only. Curator Sarah Wilson's show will display the work of some 30 artists including graduates and experienced artists.

n The Re-Dress exhibition returns to Paxton House, near Berwick upon Tweed, on August 6. The exhibition returns with 12 new fashion pieces & the return of Paxton's famed Berlin Carousel costume of 1750 and pieces made by students from Heriot-Watt University.

n Artists and performers will join cultural commentators and academics to debate issues inspired by the Edinburgh Festival in a series of talks titled Encounters. The series, which launches on August 12 and takes place at The Hub, will include participants such as Robert McCrum, Liz Lochhead (pictured) and Frank McGuinness.
