Edinburgh University's Talbot Rice Gallery, which is showing the intricate and disturbing little oils of Christopher Orr until February 14, is celebrating its 40th birthday this year and has announced a diverse programme of three shows to mark the occasion.

Ross Birrell is creating a site-specific audio-visual installation that will be in place from March to May exploring his well-marked territory of philosophy, place, politics and music. For the Edinburgh Festival season, the gallery has the first major solo show in Scotland by German conceptual artist Hanne Darboven and at the end of 2015 Luc Tuymans will be both artist and curator, selecting Henry Raeburn portraits from the university collection to pair with his own work.
