l Top Scots fiddler Bruce MacGregor, presenter of Travelling Folk on Radio Scotland, promoter of gigs at Bogbain Farm and founder of Blazin' Fiddles, is out on his own Enterprise Music Scotland supported tour.

He is at An Tobar, Isle of Mull, on Friday and The Tin Hut, Gartly, on Saturday. He's in the Central Belt after that, with a show at St Andrew's in the Square, Glasgow, on Sunday and Leith Folk Club on November 20.

l The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra is launching a recruitment drive as part of its 10th anniversary festival with an improvisation workshop led by Maggie Nicols on December 1 from 11am to 1pm at Glasgow's CCA. It is open to all instruments or other methods of sound production and all levels of musical experience. For an hour beforehand, from 10am, the GIO's education director, bassist Una MacGlone, will be leading a workshop for three to five-year-olds and their parent or carer. Both events are free, but ticketed.

l Tony Davidson's Kilmorack Gallery, near Beauly in Invernessshire, opens its Christmas exhibition on November 24. The show, which runs until December 22, has work to suit all budgets from artists such as Helen Denerley, Lotte Glob, Kirstie Cohen, Allan MacDonald and Laurence Broderick. The gallery is open from 11am, Wednesday to Saturday.

l Violinist Nigel Kennedy has announced a new tour in spring which will begin at Edinburgh's Usher Hall. Following his triumph at the same venue in January of this year, and Perth Festival appearance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the end of May, it shows just how much a fanbase he has in Scotland. Next year's programme will include the work of JS Bach and Kennedy's own arrangements of the jazz of Fats Waller.
