Actress Patsy Kensit on weight loss, trustworthy friends and what she learned from being a child star. By Susan Swarbrick.

When I was seven ...

I was living in Russia doing a movie with Elizabeth Taylor called the Blue Bird. She was amazing to work with; really the most wonderful, caring women. I lived in Russia for a year and it was an incredible experience. I enjoyed going to see the ballet.

The first time heart was broken ...

When my mum got sick and I realised that I could lose her. I was six years old and I remember feeling very frightened.

The biggest adversity I have overcome ...

Gaining weight, but I have been able to lose it again with Weight Watchers. I now feel like a different person to the girl that I was last summer in a really positive way: I’m more confident and happy. I love the fact that the plan fits into my role of being a mum, work and my love of cooking.

My motto for life ...

Be happy and grateful.

My soul mate is ...

My children – although I’m sure I’m not theirs.

Not many people know that ...

I like to bake, especially cupcakes, cookies and apple pie. My favourite culinary creation is my roast chicken recipe. It’s chicken covered in Parma ham, drizzled with lemon and garlic, then roasted. The Parma ham goes crispy like crackling and the flavours are amazing.

I had a little disaster in the kitchen on Christmas Eve. I was cooking two roast chickens, but the one in the bottom oven was a bit of a disaster – it didn’t seem to be cooking. Needless to say I was a bit flustered and there were a few tears, but I did manage to salvage it.

The most inspiring book I’ve read was ...

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It’s about rekindling the artist in you.

If ever I feel lonely ...

I don’t get lonely. I love being on my own. I’ve acted since childhood and when I was 16, I didn’t have a chaperone with me any more so I had to toughen up and get used to being on my own. That was a great experience; it’s been a real gift.

What I look for in a friend is ...

If you tell them something, they won’t repeat it. Whatever you tell them, it stops there.

The first person I ring when I’m upset is ...

My best friend Angela, who I can tell anything to. I have known her for 25 years, we met through another close friend, hit it off and have been the best of friends ever since. Angela is great in a crisis, she is an amazing, calm person and always so lovely with great advice. We are both quite quirky and enjoy each other’s quirky ways. I would describe Angela as very smart, wise and dependable.

The secret to a strong relationship is ...

Honesty.

My all-time favourite YouTube clip ...

YouTube? I’m not a tech person.

My childhood hero was ...

Judy Garland. I was a huge fan and loved all the MGM musicals: Singin’ In The Rain, Meet Me in St Louis, that was the golden era of Hollywood. I loved her talent and the incredible life she had.

The place I most like to call home ...

My bedroom.
