l The tireless saxophonist Tommy Smith follows up his latest successful project as director of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with a series of concerts across Scotland by his acclaimed Karma quartet.
The group's debut album received five-star reviews from BBC Music Magazine and the Irish Times as well as winning the Album of the Year title at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2012. l Blues singer-guitarist Marcus Bonfanti, who has been likened to Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page being reborn as Seasick Steve, presents a different side to his musical personality on his latest Scottish appearances this week. Best known for his high-energy shows with his three-piece band, Bonfanti is currently touring the UK with an intimate solo set, presenting old and new material as his regular audience have never heard him before. He plays Backstage at the Green Hotel, Kinross, on Wednesday, Kilspindie House, Aberlady, Thursday; Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Friday; and the Roxy, Glasgow, Saturday.

l The Scottish Chamber Orchestra's former leader and regular returning director Alexander Janiczek will be making a swift return following his concerts last week in tandem with pianist Piotr Anderszewski. From April 10 to 14 he directs the orchestra in a programme that features three section leaders as soloists and culminates in Beethoven's Second Symphony, which visits Dumfries, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Janiczek's busy spring also includes concerts directing the Camerata Salzburg and appearance at the Bath and Orkney St Magnus Festivals.
