Dir: Alex Gibney

Runtime: 130 minutes

OSCAR-winning documentary maker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) turns his forensic eye on two of the most famous whistleblowers of the Noughties – Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, and Private Bradley Manning of the US Army.

While the Assange story is familiar, the interviews with those who knew Manning are revealing, and Gibney, as usual, manages to get on camera those talking heads of which other documentary makers can only dream. With two large subjects to cover, plus an overview of secrets in the post-9/11 age to consider, the film suffers from information overload. Just as data fatigue is setting in, along comes an electifying section on Assange.

Filmhouse, Edinburgh, July 12-25.
