Reed's classic album suite on the ears
THE first of Glasgow's Classic Album Sundays for 2014 falls on Sunday January 26 when the disc under consideration will be Transformer by the late Lou Reed, the album that launched him as a solo artist, with a little help from fan David Bowie.
The evening, in The Berkeley Suite in Glasgow's North Street, is hosted by Hi-Fi emporium Loud'n'Clear and will culminate in a playback of a pristine vinyl copy of the album on the finest Linn audio equipment, as manufactured in the custom built factory to the south of the city. From 5.30pm the listening will be music that informed the background to Transformer, including David Bowie, The Stooges and the Velvet Underground, with the disc itself being placed on the Linn Sondek at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £6.

Scottish debut for young cellist
THE winner of the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, cellist Laura van der Heijden, makes her Scottish debut at the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles as part of the current season of chamber music club Music in the border town. The club, which is fast approaching its 70th anniversary, had a concert by violinist Jennifer Pike, the winner of the competition a decade earlier, in November. Laura, who is still at school and working towards her A-levels, will be accompanied by Japanese pianist Mana Oguchi in a programme the starts with Beethoven and Brahms and moves on to Schnittke and Britten after the interval. The recital is on February 18, at 7.30pm, and tickets are £13, but only £6 for adults accompanying a child under 12 and free to school students and club members.

Choreographer
at the Tramway Renowned choreographer, and regular visitor to Scotland, Siobhan Davies, has recently made more work outside conventional performances spaces than for the dance stage. Table of Contents is "A Live Installation: Memory and Presence" which has been created by Siobhan Davies Dance with London's ICA, the Arnolfini in Bristol and Glasgow Tramway, where it will be seen from January 29 to February 9. Starting with her own history as a dancer and choreographer, Table of Contents is a collaboration with dance artists Andrea Buckley, Helka Kaski, Rachel Krische, Charlie Morrissey and Matthias Sperling which builds on their own embodied history and memory and creates work in which the audience intermingles with the audience in the style of an art gallery rather than the stage.

Wind players given an airing
Athenaem Winds is a young quintet of wind players from the Royal Scottish Conservatoire who are current recipients of the residency development programme run by Enterprise Music Scotland. Formed in 2010, the group has been working with composer David Fennessy among other mentors, in the idyllic environment of Crear in Argyll. The results of those studies will be available to listeners in Ayr and Falkirk when the group plays Falkirk Town Hall on Friday, January 17 and Alloway Church Hall on Saturday, January 18. Both concerts are at 7.30pm.
