Action-packed year for national jazz orchestra
THE Scottish National Jazz Orchestra's busy and successful 2013 is set to be followed by a new year in much the same key.
The first event in the big band's calendar is the release, on Tommy Smith's Spartacus Records, of American Adventure, a disc of recordings made last summer in New York's Avatar Studios with guests that include vocalist Kurt Elling, with whom the orchestra has formed a lasting relationship, guitarist Mike Stern and Joe Locke on vibes. It is out on February 17. Shortly afterwards the band is out on the road with Elling - the Syntopicon tour visits Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow on February 21, 22, and 23.
In March the SNJO's guest is saxophonist Courtney Pine in a programme, Revisiting Coltrane, that celebrates the legacy of one of the giants on the instrument, and in April pianist Makoto Ozone brings his re-imagining of Mozart's Piano Concert No 9, commissioned from him by the SNJO, to concerts in Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Concert tribute to young harpist
LEADING clarsach players including Karen Marshalsay, Jennifer Port and Fiona Rutherford will give a concert in Kinross Parish Church on Sunday February 16 in tribute to Esme Macintyre, the harpist who died aged 18 last summer after suffering from a brain tumour for nearly seven years. Esme played clarsach from the age of nine and became an inspiration to thousands of people via her Facebook page after she began writing an account of the challenges she faced through her illness. Having decided to make the most of her life with a wish list of things to do, Esme took part in fashion shows, went snow biking and hot air ballooning and met sporting heroes Sir Chris Hoy and Andy Murray and singers Amy Macdonald and Emeli Sande.
All the participants in the concert have written tunes especially for Esme and will perform them in her honour. Proceeds will go to Teenage Cancer Trust.
