Tribute night to celebrate songwriter
Sounds in the Suburbs, the promoter who brings music to the heart of Jordanhill, has organised a night at Woodend Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club on February 6 to celebrate the life and work of Jackie Leven, the Fife-born singer, guitarist and songwriter who died in November 2011. Participants lined up so far include kindred spirits Andy White, Malcolm Lindsay, Graham Skinner, Douglas McIntyre, Ken McClusky, Scott MacDonald and Paul Tasker. Leven's partner Deborah Greenwood has hopes to sing and all proceeds will go to the Core Trust.

Sesame Street for adults only
THE raunchy Sesame Street-for-grown-ups musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Avenue Q, has - perhaps unsurprisingly - become a favourite among students on a musical theatre course as soon as the rights to perform it became available. Young folks from the BA course at the University of the West of Scotland are the latest to bring the down-at-heel New York street to Scotland, in collaboration with the Stowaways company. The production, overseen by Stephen Langston and Jane Robertson, is at Ayr Gaiety for four nights from Wednesday to Saturday.

Jazz returns to Tron Theatre
The Tron Theatre in Glasgow resumes its Sunday afternoon jazz sessions in its Victorian Bar on February 2. A full programme is still being compiled but attractions confirmed so far include pianist Euan Stevenson's trio, trumpeter Colin Steele's Remember Chet tribute to Chet Baker with singer Iain Ewing, and saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski.

Showcase for Gaelic singers
Comunn Gàidhlig Inbhir Nis - The Gaelic Society of Inverness - is holding its annual Gaelic showcase Taigh Cèilidh at the city's Empire Theatre on March 7. The cast comprises singers Arthur Cormack, Sineag MacIntyre, Iain MacKay, Kirsteen MacDonald, and Alex Macdonald, piper DJ MacIntyre and new band Marloch.
