Sherlock star Andrew Scott is to play an out-of-control rock singer in a new play.

The actor, who plays arch-villain Moriarty in the hit detective show, will appear in Birdland at London's Royal Court Theatre.

The play, written by Simon Stephens who adapted Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time for the National Theatre, is set at the end of a massive international tour and examines what happens to Scott's character when the music ends.

It will run from April 3 to the end of May.

Scott, who was born in Dublin, was named best supporting actor at the 2012 Bafta TV awards for his performance as the great detective's bitter rival.
