PhD student vies for top poetry prize

A POET and playwright studying for a PhD at the University of Stirling is vying for honours in a prestigious poetry competition.

Hannah Silva is among five writers in the running for the £5000 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. The winner will be announced in London on Friday.

Hannah, 30, who grew up in Suffolk and now lives in to Birmingham, was shortlisted for a piece called Total Man.

Her work is characterised by its "playful interrogation of language, voice and form".

Pygmies are set for capital gig

EDINBURGH-based jazz, funk, blues, ska, and afro band Pygmies have a gig at the city's Caley Roots Club tomorrow.

The club meets at Caley Sample Rooms, 58 Angle Park Terrace, from 8.30pm.
