Harp festival takes place at school

EDINBURGH International Harp Festival goes ahead at Merchiston Castle School from Friday to Wednesday, April 9. Attractions include Paraguayan Sixto Corbalán, Edward Witsenburg (Netherlands), Eva Curth (Germany), Clothilde Trouillaud (Brittany), Siân James (Wales), and the Swedish-Scots partnership of nyckelharper Olov Johansson and harper Catriona McKay. There are workshops, courses, ceilidhs and come and try sessions in wire harp, pedal harp, ukulele, and percussion.

Commissions announced

DETAILS of new traditional arts commissions have been announced for Aberdeenshire, the Western Isles, Nairn, Edinburgh, Mull, Skye, Stirlingshire and Dundee.

Funded by £117,885 from Creative Scotland's Traditional Arts Programme, they include a project on the people of Newhaven with contributions from residents and artists called Bow-Tow, A Newhaven Story.

Pròiseact nan Ealan in the Western Isles will create five Gaelic multimedia exhibitions to commemorate the contribution Western Isles people made in the First World War. Tales of a Grandson is Andy Cannon's story of Scotland, inspired by Sir Walter Scott, for the Macrobert, Stirling, and the Scottish Storytelling Festival. Scots composer Mike Vass will collaborate with Calmac and House of Lochar publishing to create a suite in celebration of author Neil Gunn and his 1937 voyage around the west coast of Scotland.
