Dates set for city festival

The 19th West End Festival in Glasgow will run from June 1 to June 29 with the Byres Road parade on June 8 and the Gibson Street Gala, which was founded by the West End Festival 10 years ago, opening the festival on June 1.

The Cottier Chamber Project takes place from June 6 to 20 this year and includes literature, theatre and visual art as well as music. This year a new project has been added to the bill, The Cottier Dance Project, Glasgow's only professional dance festival, running from June 23-27.

The festival programme includes more than 400 events in 80 venues across the west end of Glasgow. The parade is the big participative highlight of the festival, last year attracting 80,000 people.

Painting will return today

One of Sir James Guthrie's most celebrated paintings returns to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum today.

In the Orchard was recently bought in a joint purchase between Glasgow Museums and the National Galleries of Scotland, with the support of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Art Fund.

It was purchased with the NGS in November 2012 for £637,500 at Sotherby's, to which Glasgow contributed more than £75,000. A talk about the masterpiece will take place at the painting in Kelvingrove at 2pm today by Dr Joanna Meacock, curator of British art.
