Dexy screening an Occasional Flicker treat Monorail Film Club.

the music emporium's monthly screenings at Glasgow Film Theatre, steals a march on Sheffield's Documentary Film Festival (June 7 to 12) with a screening of the Kieran Evans and Paul Kelly's film about Dexy's (Midnight Runners), Nowhere is Home, on Sunday, May 25, from 8.15pm.

It was shot over the final nights of the band's residency at the Duke of York's Theatre in London last year, and captures those theatrical shows, interspersed with interviews with frontman Kevin Rowland and trombonist Jim Paterson.

Both of them and Kelly will introduce the film and answer questions.

Top singers set for folk birthday Leith Folk Club gears up for its special tenth birthday concert on June 10 with visits from traditionalists Ribbon Road (May 20), singing siblings from Geneva, Alabama, "Mean" Mary & Frank James (May 27), and the Old Blind Dogs' Aaron Jones performing solo (June 3).

Details for June 10 are still being finalised but the ticket price has been confirmed as £5, which was the entry fee for the club's first event in 2004. All concerts take place at Victoria Park House Hotel, Edinburgh, and the music starts at 8pm.

Kora player's degree honour

Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté, who appears at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, on Thursday, May 29, has been awarded an Honorary degree of Doctor of Music (D.Mus) by SOAS, University of London, in recognition of his influential work in raising awareness of the kora and the traditional music of Mali around the world and his contribution to the university's Mande language scholarship.

Diabaté and his family have been involved with this scholarship since the first Mande Studies Conference at SOAS in 1972.

Earlier this month Diabaté released an album of kora duets with his twenty-two- year-old son, Sidiki, who joins him on the tour that brings them to the Usher Hall.
