A tribute to the American wild west

PERTH Racecourse on Gold Cup Weekend is the setting for an Americana Cavalcade on Saturday June 7. Organisers Medicine Show Records have announced that Minnesotan rancher-musician Charlie Roth, above, and 1960s hit makers Vanity Fare, who will present their acclaimed tribute to the Byrds, will join Scottish Americana artists including The Red Pine Timber Company, The New Madrids, Roberto Cassani and the Tickety-two, The David Latto Band, Davy Cowan and Dave Fleming in an all-day event that includes wild west re-enactments, western horse riding and other western-themed entertainments for all the family.

The Voice star performs

SALLY Barker, the singer who swept Tom Jones off his feet on BBC talent show The Voice, is among the first attractions announced for this year's Acoustic Music Centre@St Bride's line-up during the Edinburgh Fringe. Leicestershire-based Barker racked up four decades of professional experience before entering The Voice, including gigs with Bob Dylan and Robert Plant and two stints with popular folk group The Poozies and scored a Fringe success previously with her tribute to Joni Mitchell. She's back this year for one night only on Thursday, August 14.

Free gigs at Burns festival

THE musical taste of our national bard would surely have chimed with something on the bill of this year's Burns an' a' That festival in Ayr this weekend. Tribute is paid to the Elvis Presley in the Gaiety Theatre on Friday, before the programme at the Belleisle Live Music Tent that runs over the next two days. Claire Gragan leads the re-formed Altered Images from 4.30pm, with Dr Robert at the front of The Blow Monkeys following from 5.30pm. Those performances are free, as is Matt Cardle's at the same venue from 1pm on Sunday, Tickets are available from the Gaiety box office for the show by Jim Diamond (of PhD fame) and Horse in tent on Sunday evening from 7.30pm.

Acclaimed album tour

GLASGOW band Two Wings, whose new album, A Wake, on Tin Angel Records, combines the writing skills of singer Hanna Tuulikki and guitarist Ben Reynolds and has won considerable praise everywhere from the Financial Times to webzine Line of Best Fit (as well as The Herald), are out of the road to promote the disc from Saturday. There are performances in Bradford, Newcastle, Brighton, Manchester, Coventry and London next week before a homecoming album-launching soiree at Nice'n'Sleazy in Sauchiehall Street on June 21.
