Singer marks her return with festival spot

SCOTTISH folk singer and songwriter Shelagh McDonald, who recently returned to public performances after an absence of more than 30 years, is among the guests at Solas Festival, which runs in Tibbermore in rural Perthshire from June 20-22. McDonald was tipped for major stardom on the world folk scene before her sudden departure from the music business and will be talking about the personal problems that affected her career, as well as appearing in a programme that includes music, literature, theatre, dance and visual art from King Creosote, Rachel Sermani, Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate, Alasdair Gray, Stanley Odd and Beerjacket.

Night of Zappa at music club

EDINBURGH'S Click Clack Club continues to present adventurous music in its monthly evenings at Henry's Cellar Bar. The July edition features Glasgow septet Steele Plays Zappa's recreations of the iconoclastic Frank Zappa's oeuvre but before that, on June 12, bassist Dave Conway introduces his latest band, Blow Below Below. Jazz singer Freddie King tussles with saxophonist Steve Kettley and bass guitarist Aki Remally, and left-field funk, jazz and rock exponents Thunkfish return.
