In the frame at Jazz Festival

Journalist and regular Herald contributor Alison Kerr has curated an exhibition of photographs for Glasgow Jazz Festival, featuring jazz stars who visited Glasgow from the 1930s through to the 1990s.

Gathered from the Herald's archives, Jazz Stars In Glasgow includes Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nina Simone, Lena Horne (who can be seen dancing in the City Halls) and Cab Calloway (who appeared in the city in 1934 and 1989).

It will be on display in the City Halls until Sunday before moving to the Rio Cafe in Hyndland Street for the rest of the summer, and follows Kerr's previous exhibitions, City Of Stars I and II, Stars In Scotland and City Of Classical Stars.

Hitting right note during Games

Organisers of Earagail Arts Festival in Donegal are offering an alternative attraction when the Commonwealth Games take over Glasgow next month.

With a daily bus service between Glasgow and Letterkenny continuing a long-established connection, traditional music lovers can take in some or all of a programme that runs from July 11-27 and includes accordionist Sharon Shannon and singers Frances Black and Mary Coughlan alongside Donegal's popular new roots music exports The Henry Girls.

There's also a Donegal master fiddlers' gala performance which will showcase three of the county's greatest living traditional players - Vincent Campbell, Dinny McLaughlin and Danny Meehan - as well as the younger generation including fiddle trio Fidil.

Other attractions include self-contained mini-festivals on the island of Arranmore (July 11-13) and in the picturesque village of Falcarragh (July 18-20), walks, poetry readings, storytelling and a wider music programme including Tuareg guitarist-singer Bombino and flamenco-jazz guitarist Eduardo Niebla.
